HALLSTATT

DAY TRIP TO SERENITY

HALLSTATT

HALLSTATT is not HALLSTADT
It is a small but very beautiful town in Upper Austria in Salzkammergut region. Situated between the southwestern shore of Hallstätter See and the steep slopes of the Dachstein massif. It is one of the most popular tourist destination in Austria (especially Chinese tourist love it – so much so that they built a replica of hallstatt in China). It is one of many heritage sites protected by UNESCO and declared as WORLD HERITAGE. If you are in Austria and you have not seen Hallstatt trust me you have missed a great deal.

Travel Tips

Minimum stay: Day trip / 1 night stay
Book a hotel close to Hallstatt, NOT IN Hallstatt (for example: Bad Ischl or Bad Goisern) it’s 15-20 minute drive from Hallstatt and will save you a buck. Alternatively follow this link to find appropriate accommodation in Salzkammergut.
Do not forget to take a free Salzkammergut Summer Card, if you are staying at one of the hotels in the list.
I would recommend choosing a weekday in spring / summer to visit Hallstatt.
Renting a car is a better option (of course if you do not own one). Otherwise, book in advance and get a ÖBB Sparschiene
Travel Budget 2 adults day trip 100 – 150 Euro (with car) and 1 night approx. 150 – 200 Euros (Excluding train / bus / flight tickets)
Drive time from Vienna to Hallstatt is around 3.5 hours and this is the fastest way of reaching there.
Finding a parking is not easy in Hallstatt especially if you arrive after 12. I would recommend be there no later than 10-11 AM.
Unfortunately, there are not many good places to eat in Hallstatt and only one supermarket. Still, a better option among other restaurants is “Bella Milano” – Food and service is just above average.

Wooden houses of Hallstatt

This whimsical city is not only picturesque from outside, it’s magnificent from inside too … The dated wooden houses built on the top of each other is a sight can’t be explained in words, you have to witness it to feel it and believe it. The architecture is not only amazing but it talks to you. It seems like a passage to experience the history. Keep your eyes open and experience every inch of this place there is a lot to amuse and surprise you.

Ambassador of Hallstatt

Swans are unofficial ambassadors of Hallstatt. You will find sculptures, paddleboats and engravings in walls shaped like Swans. These beautiful water birds feel like home in Hallstatt and they own it. Beware; they are not as friendly as they might look like. If you are eating something close to these birds, they will claim their share from the supper.

Beautiful waterways and waterfall

In Hallstatt you can sit next to the beautiful waterways and waterfall, (water is cold even in summer). It is a very refreshing and rejuvenating. Tip: Explore the hidden jewels outside the city center.

Salt Mine and Top of Hallstatt

While you are in Hallstatt, visit Salt mine and Top of Hallstatt. A magnificent view of dachstein and Hallstatt is waiting for you from the top. The price for going up and down is 18 Euros and if you visit the Salt mine too it will cost you around 36-40 euro p.p. However, I would recommend going there you would love having a cup of coffee in the cafe on the top, while enjoying holistic 360 view of this amazing valley.

Other places to see en route Hallstatt

  • Stopover at Wolfgangsee – It might not be as beautiful as Hallstattersee but it is worth taking a pause here.
  • Bad Ischl (It is a recommended place to overnight)
    • While you are here dont forget to have bite at Zauner boutique style bakery, walk along the river and explore beautiful small city center.
  • After Hallstatt you should take a ride at Dachstein Krippensteinbahn (cable car) it would cost 36 euro p.p but its worth it. its operational until 1600 hours.
    • Give yourself at least 3 hours to visit this place. specially five fingers on the top and panorama view is worth every penny.
  • Rafting is also possible in obertraun for adventurers seeking some fun.
